I received lots of info from it and look forward to seeing the real thing in July when we come over to see our son graduate this July. Thank you. Without this site, I would have been overwhelmed when I arrived. Now, I know I will just have a great time and enjoy myself. Trudy Parke <va7us@rac.ca> Port Alberni, BC, Canada Thrilled beyond words - that's what I am and many others will feel as I do about the recognition you have given to the RCMP Band in your article "Remembering Bands of the Force" in vol. l6, Winter 2006 issue. It has been l2 years since the force saw fit to remove this unit and scatter 47 first rate musicians to the four corners. Often you will hear the names of some of our people in their current music endeavours: Geoff Goodspeed started and now chairs the International Jazz Festival in Halifax, Jamie Gatti's name is often heard on major CBC programming to name but two. One of our Cape Bretoners, and they were always special contributors was Harold Pretty who has made a mark in school music programs here in Ottawa and a few years ago was presented with Canada's Order of Merit by the Governor General. The second page of your article outlines some of the historic events where the Band played a special role. The list, however, does not acknowledge the thousands upon thousands of concerts, big and small, for charities in all parts of the world but primarily in Canada. Those events were important to the communities and gave a strong message of cooperation from local detachments. One other item that seems to have been neglected in all historical perspectives of the RCMP Band was the important contribution of Supt. Bram Smith as Director of Music from 1967 to 1974. It was through his energy and professionalism that the Force moved into the modern era of massed media allowing us to get the important message erof cooperation from the communities and local RCMP Detachments. The success of the RCMP Centennial Review in 1973 was due, in large part, to the vision given by Bram. On numerous occasions during his tenure Force members expressed concern that an American had been given the top job with the RCMP Band. Although Bram had been principle soloist with the internationally renowned U.S. Marine Band at the White House he was born and raised on Percy Street in Ottawa. Career highlights before coming to Ottawa was his writing and performance of the music for President Kennedy's Inauguration. It is interesting to note that when Bram died, at a very early age, the U.S. Marines asked that he be buried in Arlington Cemetery. We still have people who remember the Band Director who was always wearing a smile. Thanks again for remembering our great Band. Once I get the hang of this computer I will attempt to send you some of my historical photos that I know your readers will appreciate. Garth Hampson <garthandeleanor@rogers.com> Ottawa, Ont, Canada Our son graduated from Troup 4 1991/92 (Bruce) and we were thrilled with the ceremonies at Depot. We should all be proud of how our children entered Depot and exited Depot with the resolve to make our land safer and better. Dr.Eze Mgbada Dr.Eze Mgbada <eze_mgbada@yahoo.net> Lome Kara Togo The widow of a member of Ottawa Division asked me to contact the Regina RCMP Museum to ascertain if it would be interested in receiving/displaying a pair of original, never worn, pebbled, high boots. She suggested these boots are unique in that currently issued high boots do not contain pebble. I will leave the truthfullness of that statement to you. I will await your decision and relay it accordingly. Thank you. E.J.
